An inexpensive treatment is placing mothballs in your containers -- you can get them inexpensively from a dollar store.

You can also place river rocks or attractive stones on top of the soil after planting, to discourage squirrels from digging...also at the dollar stores.

Make a solution with hot spices--peppers, Old Bay, a drop of oil to help the solution adhere to plant leaves; you'll have to re-apply, particularly if it rains.

I recommend deer-off, but it is pricey.

As mentioned, you should get good results with the chicken wire if placed securely in your containers.

Just a note, we have several squirrels that we enjoy watching . If you are an animal or nature lover, I wouldn't recommend trapping and re-locating for squirrels. Placed in a new location, they usually die, due to either a lack of food or competition from other squirrels. What can I use from home to kept squirrels out of potted plants.?Tried red pepper?
We had this problem with chipmunks, I could never start sunflowers without them invading them at all stages and locations. Pepper didn't work for me either. We finally ended up buying an appropriate sized Hav-a-Hart trap (catches them without injury) and relocated them to a sheltered, wooded area with a similar fallen log and sufficient food sources. Restrictions may apply in different states but might be worth looking into. Another kinda nutty idea to deter critters is to ';mark'; the surrounding area with urine (a la ';Never Cry Wolf';), you can buy powdered fox urine, or use your own. Definitely not for the faint of heart but when you're desperate.........

Good luck!
get chicken wire and cut circles the same size as the pots and just put them in, when the flowers are put in cut to let them through or if from seed they will grow through. squirrels are pretty stubborn little guys but i dont advocate killing them
Call the United Wildlife's squirrel pest-control. 1-888-488-1415. Then they should be able to help you with your problem.
A Cat ! : as long as the cat hasn't been de-clawed and made docile - a cat will get rid of the squirrels for you.
grind up glass and put it into squash or pumpkin. squirrels will be gone w/in a few weeks.
